GovBot Energy Infrastructure
Read-only access to U.S. energy infrastructure published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA): power plants near a location, generating capacity for a state or balancing authority, refineries and other fuel facilities near a location, and major oil, gas and liquids pipelines in an area. No account or sign-in is required.
Sources
- U.S. Energy Information Administration, EIA Open Data API: monthly inventory of operable generators (Forms EIA-860 and EIA-860M), latest month published.
- U.S. Energy Information Administration, U.S. Energy Atlas map-data files: petroleum refineries (EIA-820, January 1, 2021), natural gas processing plants (EIA-757, 2017), underground natural gas storage fields (EIA-191, December 2020), bulk petroleum product terminals (EIA-815, September 2021), fuel ethanol and biodiesel plants (EIA-819, January 1, 2021), coal mines (EIA-7A, 2020), and major natural gas, crude oil, petroleum product and hydrocarbon gas liquids pipelines (January 2020).
Each result states the EIA dataset, data period, file date and retrieval time. EIA data are held in memory for up to twelve hours and refreshed from EIA.
Available operations
- Power plants within a radius of a latitude and longitude: operator, capacity by energy source and technology, status, balancing authority and planned retirements.
- Generating capacity by energy source and status for a state or an EIA balancing authority, with the largest plants.
- Refineries, natural gas processing plants, underground gas storage, petroleum product terminals, ethanol and biodiesel plants and coal mines within a radius of a latitude and longitude, with published capacities.
- Major pipelines crossing a bounding box or a radius around a point: type, operator, name and length inside the area.
- The EIA sources, data periods and record counts, and the layers not covered.

Scope and support
Results are public map and survey data at map scale. They are not engineering, safety, route, right-of-way, permitting, interconnection or capacity-availability determinations, and they are not a basis for locating any facility on the ground. Pipeline routes are generalized and can be offset from the actual line by a kilometer or more. Underground facilities are located before excavation through the 811 call-before-you-dig system. The service does not include electric transmission lines, substations, LNG terminals, balancing authority areas or utility service territories. GovBot is not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Energy Information Administration or any government agency.
